How to Use a Battery Runtime Calculator
The Battery Runtime Calculator helps estimate how long a battery can power a device or system before recharging. By entering the battery voltage, capacity, and equipment power consumption, the calculator provides an estimated runtime based on the available battery energy and load requirements.
This tool can be used for various applications, including backup power systems, industrial equipment, portable devices, and battery-powered machines.
For example, a 48V 100Ah battery contains approximately 4.8kWh of energy. When powering a 500W device, the estimated runtime can be calculated based on the available battery capacity and actual operating conditions.
Step 1: Enter Battery Information
Battery Voltage
Enter the rated voltage of your battery.
Common values include:
- 12V
- 24V
- 36V
- 48V
- 51.2V
- 72V
The voltage value can usually be found on the battery label or product specification sheet.
Battery Capacity
Enter the battery capacity in amp-hours (Ah).
Example:
Battery Capacity: 100Ah
The calculator uses the voltage and capacity values to estimate the total stored battery energy.
Step 2: Enter Equipment Power Consumption
Enter the power consumption of the device connected to the battery.
The value should be entered in watts (W).
Example:
Equipment Power: 500W
If multiple devices are connected, add their power consumption together before entering the total value.
Step 3: Adjust Advanced Settings (Optional)
For a more accurate estimation, you can adjust additional parameters such as:
System Efficiency
This accounts for energy losses during operation, including conversion and system losses.
The default value is typically around 90%.
Depth of Discharge
This determines how much of the battery capacity is available for use.
The default value may vary depending on battery type and application requirements.
Step 4: Review the Calculated Runtime
After entering the required information, the calculator will display the estimated battery runtime.
The basic calculation is:
Runtime = Available Battery Energy ÷ Power Consumption
For example:
A battery with:
- 48V voltage
- 100Ah capacity
- 500W load
can provide an estimated runtime based on its available energy and operating efficiency.
Tips for More Accurate Results
Use Actual Power Consumption
Use the average operating power of your equipment instead of only the maximum rated power whenever possible.
Check Battery Specifications
Make sure the voltage and capacity values match the actual battery specifications.
Consider Operating Conditions
Actual runtime may vary depending on temperature, battery condition, load changes, and system efficiency.
